The NST : Swimmer Keith Lim equals his personal best in Gold Coast

GOLD COAST: Malaysia’s Keith Lim equalled his personal best in the Commonwealth Games men's 50m freestyle swimming on Monday, but it was not enough to qualify for the semi-finals at the Optus Aquatic Centre.

Keith won heat five by clocking 23.33s. However, he only finished 22nd overall, 0.92 second short of qualifying for the top-16 semi-finals.

"I equalled my personal best today... satisfied with the time as I have not swum this fast since the Sea Games last year. I could have done better or worse, so I am not complaining," said Keith.

"However, I wasn't satisfied with my 100m freestyle performance on Sunday. I need to work on my speed to improve my time."

Compatriot Caroline Chan clocked 30.10s, 0.50 seconds off her national record set at the 2016 Asian Championships in Japan, in the women's 50m backstroke.

She finished 18th overall.

"I had hoped to break my national record here. I need to learn how to control my nerves and swim better," said Caroline.

Both Keith and Caroline will compete in next month's Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur which is a qualifier for the Indonesia Asian Games later this year.

The swimmers ended their campaigns commendably though they did not win medals.

Tern Jian Han and Welson Sim were the stars by reaching the finals of the 50m backstroke and 400m freestyle events.

MORE than 150 sports associations and related NGOs within the Federal Territories of Putrajaya, Labuan and Kuala Lumpur received financial aid which will benefit ongoing efforts to bolster athletes’ preparations for the Perak Sukma Games in September.

A total of RM515,000 from the Federal Territories Sports Council (MSWP) was distributed during a ceremony hosted by MSWP at the MyTown Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The money will also be used to cover some of the costs of managing the associations and serve as an incentive to excel in their respective fields of sport.

Of the RM515,000 distributed, RM325,000 was allocated to associations in Kuala Lumpur, while RM130,000 went to associations in Putrajaya and those in Labuan received RM60,000.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Loga Bala Mohan, who presented the cheques to the associations, said the money will continue to give youths a chance to pursue excellence in their sport of choice.

He also reminded the associations that the funds should be managed prudently and systematically to avoid wastage, jeopardising sports development within the territories.

The Federal Territories will be vying to wrestle back the title of overall champions after their 2016 Sukma campaign in Sarawak which landed the contingent in fourth overall with 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals.

In the 2014 edition in Perlis, the Federal Territories were overall champions after landing a total of 142 medals – 55 gold, 38 silver and 49 bronze.

This year’s competition, however, is expected to be stiff, especially coming from Sarawak, Selangor, Terengganu and hosts Perak.

MSWP director Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii said MSWP has not set a target this year but will be participating in all sports events and will field some 800 athletes.

“As for preparations, we are on track and we are also pleased that weightlifting has been included in the games which will help us in the medal tally.

He said the RM515,000 aid for associations and NGOs was a form of recognition for the contribution towards building up the grassroots which is an important aspect of development.

“We hope they will be able to continue their efforts in helping to bring in the medals for Federal Territories this year,” he added.

Kindly note that ASUM's calendar has been updated with the changes of the following dates :

27-29 July, 2018 : ASUM/MILO/NSC Swim Splash Leg 2 - Melaka

23-25 Nov, 2018 : 37th National Inter-Club Swimming Championship 2018 for the President Cup - Ipoh, Perak.

The hosts and venues remain unchanged.

PRAKL gets administration grant from MSWP

The weekend was filled with activities organised by Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan (MSWP) at MyTown, Kuala Lumpur and part of the program was to deliver the administration grants to 38 sport associations and NGOs in the Federal Territory.

The ceremony was officiated by YB Senator Dato' Dr. Loga Bala Mohan, the Deputy Minister of Federal Territory and the awards were presented by YB. Dato' Loga alongside other VIPs and Executive Director of MSWP, Dato' Mohd Razlan Rafii.

PRAKL is grateful of MSWP's assistance and support in its development in aquatic sports. The President, Mr Teo Mua Seng, Honorary Secretary, Ms Mae Chen and Assistant Secretary, Ms Nancy Yap were present to receive the grant.

If you are 15 years old and above,  passionate in swimming sport  and  interested to be part of the officials to run swim meets in Kuala Lumpur,  please sign-up as a volunteer now.

Offers will be made to volunteers willing to contribute their service for the entire days/duration of the swim meet to avoid disruption of duties. Certificates of appreciations will be awarded and technical logbook will be endorsed by the organiser. Meals and allowance will be given too.
